The Hulk books are turning into some of the most consistently great comic books around; the Incredible Hulks is an action-packed blast, She-Hulks draws on the love of Power Girl-esque fun and this series highlights everything that’s been wrong with the character for years. This is a pared down Hulk book, and while it focuses on the Red Hulk rather than the Green one, it makes perfect sense for it to do so. Jeff Parker gets these characters, and Thunderbolt Ross comes across throughout as a horrible person, but one who’s being changed by the circumstances he’s found himself in; being the Red Hulk has changed him, and his outlook throughout the book seems a lot less hard-nosed than in previous issues. There’s action here, too, though as the Red Hulk teams up with Rick Jones and faces off against some giant dinosaurs and the like; it’s crazy fun and every page is a blast. That’s as much down to the excellent artwork by Gabriel Hardman than anything else; this style doesn’t feel like it should fit the book, falling into a more hard-edged noir feel, but somehow Hardman pulls it off – the book oozes with brilliance, particularly during the gigantic splash pages which are dominated by swirls of colour and brutality that complement each other perfectly.
