Back in Avengers #10, Marvel did something I’d never seen before: for the regular cover price of the book, you got your full-length issue of Avengers, and were then given a FULL ISSUE preview of Heroes for Hire #1. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. Not because Heroes for Hire #1 was anything spectacular, though it was very good. No, I just couldn’t believe Marvel was essentially GIVING AWAY a free copy of issue #1. I read it, and thanks to Abnett & Lanning’s storytelling abilities and Brad walker’s art, I was hooked. After a few issue, Brad Walker went away, then Fear Itself happened and my desire to keep reading this book slowly started to go away, as well. This issue brings them both back, however, in an excellent way. Without having to tie in to any distracting events, these creators have managed to give us action, character development, and closure to their first storyline in the course of twenty fulfilling pages. If only they all could have been this good. That having been said, I’m ducking out of the Spider-Island cross-over issue. So many events. Why can’t they just leave a good book alone? Oh yeah, sales. Right.

Story: 4 - Very Good

  1. I pretty much agree. If they’d just let these guys write this book, it would be consistently great. This was probably my favorite book this week, but I’m still on the fence about it. This may be a great jumping-off point.
