Like a lot of people I had the ending to this issue spoiled for me as it has been all over the internet the last week but this issue still managed to blow me away. I have read Hellboy for years and I recently re read the trade paperbacks in anticipation for this final part of Mignola and Fredrego's epic storyline and it made this reading experience so much better.
About half of the issue was what Hellboy does best, fighting big ass monsters, this monster happened to be the dragon Ogdru Jahad which was first mentioned in the very first Hellboy series in 1994. The other half shows the hyped ending of Hellboy and what it means for other characters and England.
Mike Mignola has proven himself as good of a writer as he is an artist, this issue ties together a lot of the Hellboy mythology and especially the Fregredo epic. There are references to a lot of characters that have appeared recently all within this issue including Queen Mab, Vasilisa, Nimue, Edward Grey and a lot of others showing just how well this epic storyline has worked as a whole. The small flowers at the ending are a reference to 'Nature of the Beast' which is a short story that was published in 2000, this shows just how much Mignola has this whole world pieced together.
Duncan Fredrego's art complements this extremely well, the first half in which Hellboy is fighting the dragon is fantastic art that was to be expected due to the excellent work he has done for Hellboy so far. Hellboy's final scene was portrayed extremely well especially the pile of witches at Nimue's feet and Hellboy's heart plunging into blackness.
I think Dave Stewart is the real star of the show, his coloring talents in this book show us why he has won the Eisner award for best colorist countless times. After the death scene are a few short quiet scenes that show the result of what has happened it can be noticed that the issue gradually fades from the vibrant colors of the fight scene until the final few pages, showing a destroyed England are in black and white with graytones, a complete contrast. This change isn't an instant change but one that comes gradually and masterfully over the last ten or so pages. Then the yellow flowers popping up add this scene, making of the best issues I have read this year.
Next year Mignola is on Hellboy with art and writing duties where form the issue it can be assumed we see him in hell, I can't wait to see how this book changes and what happens to Hellboy especially with Dave Stewart coloring him.
