FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK. John is an asshole. That's always a theme in Hellblazer. But this poor guy just wants to marry his woman.
This issue starts off right where the last ended. Gloria, the succubus, is giving John a good 'ol shag by orders of Nergal. Epiphany's father shows up to give John the oppertunity of a lifetime, John refuses to, instead, go get pissed. Instead he finds Gloria gutted in a closet. It's clear to John that Nergal is sending a message that he is willing to kill people to ensure John is a miserable fuck his entire life. John busts out some old spells to jump into the past, where his wench is, so he can bring her back and marry her.
Turn the page, totally different tone to the book. Epiphany is hanging with 1979 John (who is of course, an asshole) and explains to John (the one who is an asshole....oh wait...) that shes plans to marry his future self. John, being an asshole, shows that he obviously has a problem with relationships. A shagfest ensues. '79 John then helps epiphany jump to the future, but instead, '10 John shows up.
The thing that i totally love about this issue (and recent ones) is how the art style of Landini and Bisley are soooo much different, but still fit into one single issue. If someone grabbed this off a shelf and flipped through, it would seem like it's maybe two seperate constantine stories in one issue. Landini with a colorful, almost cartoony style, then Bisley with the underground punk, somewhat dirty style. It's the perfect fit for the current story they are telling. I feel like its a good contrast the the character of Constantine too. Mulvihill's bright colors in the first half match to John's new ambition to get married and do whatever necessary to get to his girl, while Beccellato's dark shades compliment the dirtbag's dark, early years in the punk scene.
Milligan is killing on this title. He's showing John's emotion while still keeping him a jackass.
Art: 5 - Excellent
