Somehow I never quite get tired of this ubiquitous subgenre of variations on the superhero theme. I mean, if they're good.
So far, HELL YEAH is good.
Ben Day has famous parents and superpowers. We aren't told precisely what they are, though his friend Sara observes that he's "kinda tough, kinda strong". But like many young adult characters who've grown up in the shadow of their fathers, Ben's a bit of a troubleseeker. He's at an exclusive university and does well there, apparently, but also tends to get into fights at dive bars on the weekends.
What made his father famous was being at the center of the appearance of superhumans in this world. Sergeant Daniel Day was captured in Kuwait during the Gulf War, tortured for information - until a team of costumed superheroes showed up to rescue him. Thing is, from the sound of it, this was the first time anyone in the world had ever encountered somebody with superpowers, much less full-blown superheroes.
The new heroes set about fixing the world. They improve a bunch of stuff. I'm sure we'll learn more about precisely what they do. Meanwhile, some people - like Ben - are now born with powers. It seems that nobody knows why.
Even though there's clearly more to the superpowered phenomenon than meets the eye, this world does not seem to be the dystopia of a WATCHMEN or the pop culture wasteland of POWERS, but a better, if still imperfect, world. What is the cost, I wonder?
The art does little for me either way. It works. It's fine. There are a few pretty gory panels, a little more than you'd expect in a DC or Marvel book, perhaps, but not particularly excessive by indie standards. Probably a firm PG-13 here.
Give it a try.
