There are many writers who people love that I just don’t connect to. The phrases I find myself using to describe their work usually sounds something like “I like the concepts they came up with, but their use of dialog felt clunky”, or “their panel to panel writing just doesn’t work for me.”  Add Jim Mccann to that category.

Hawkeye using Pym particle arrows that change size and split into several arrows?  Yes, please.  Mockingbird saying “We’re not out of this yet, sexy.”/”Hiya, can you take me to the Met?”?  No, thank you.  Concept = plus.  Execution = minus.  I found most of his dialog positively cringeworthy.

I felt much the same way I did when reading his Dazzler story last week.  This is a man who loves these characters, and it’s a shame that he can’t make me enjoy them as much as he clearly does.

  1. Hmmm. I wasn’t wowed by the DR short, but I was impressed enough with the chemistry to give this a shot.  Hopefully it works for me.

  2. This is the only book I’m buying today. I hope I enjoy it.

I really dug on his New Avengers Reunion. I think it was my pick of the week 2/5 issues or maybe even 3/5 issues.

  3. Fuck man. You’ve really cut back. Is cash super tight right now? Sorry to be intrusive, but one book doesn’t sound like you.

  4. @vadamowens: It’s a really small week.  Really small.  There were more indie books out than Marvel & DC combined.  And there weren’t that many indie books.

  5. Trying to cut back on single issues because between the weekly issues and the trades I don’t have much time to read other things.

I’ve also come to realize that I probably enjoy comics in collected edition more than in the weekly dose. I have a tendency to rate trades much higher than single issues so I assume I enjoy reading comics more in that format.

I’m down to 11 ongoing titles and a few miniseries . . . I should be coming in at about 15 titles a month instead of the 27-35 I was getting as of last month.

I’m currently working a new assignment when I should be on vacation. Money is more than good for the next couple months.

  6. well that’s good to hear:)

  7. @akamuu I don’t want to ever hear small week from you ever again Mr. 15+ titles/week;)

  8. @vadamowens: When I say "small week", I’m referring to how mahy books I had to put up on the shelf.  I’m going to read 15-20 books, even if some of them are Scooby Doo comics (which I almost did this week).  I’ve got the time, and the comics are just RIGHT THERE!  (that wasn’t yelling at you, I just turned around and the new release wall seemed to be about fifty feet closer to me than it was a few minutes ago).

    It’s all relative.  😉
