I’ve really been enjoying this series so far. It’s a western horror story that has a Jonah Hex style hero and a touch of mysticism to make it wholly its own. While the first three issues were awesome issues featuring some tight pencils and a taut story, this issue presents a bit of a stumbling block. It’s not that the comic was bad, per se, but this was an issue that is going to set up Hawken’s next big scrap. Normally, these issues can be a bit refreshing, but I didn’t find too much to grab onto in this story. The art also suffers a bit. As the last couple issues featured very detailed pencils, some of the panels in this issue look rushed. Some of them feature some detail in the foreground, but then have a sketchier looser style in the background. It’s a bit jarring, especially when the first set of issues had such great art. That’s not to say that there aren’t great panels in this issue, but the consistency is not where I would expect it to be. I’m sticking around on this series, especially with the big battle established for next issue.
