With the uniqueness of this concept and nervous laughter this book provides (honestly, I’m still remembering the first issue, where the ghost of a Confederate General looks on the black soldier bearing his namesake, only to say “there must be some mistake”, and still laughing), it would be easy to forget that this is a layered story.  You have a modern, “acceptable” prejudice in the American soldiers for the Iraqis, for which there are more derogatory names used in this book than a Thesaurus with Turrets Syndrome, cast against the “antiquated” and no-longer acceptable prejudice of our General for black people.  Of course, the latter is painted as bumbling and not particularly mean-spirited.  At least on the surface.  The General just happens to be from a different time, so it’s very counter-intuitive that his prejudices seem much worse than those of the American Soldiers.  So, in the end, you can suppose that everyone will realize the error of their ways, hug, and all get along… right?  Of course not.  The fun of this book, even though this issue is transitional and largely uneventful, is waiting for the swerve.  And I’ll be eagerly awaiting it.
