This was my favorite issue of Haunt so far, which has given me mixed emotions because I had planned to drop this title after this issue. I've yet to decide if that is the case now, so I guess I will just wait and see how I'm feeling about it next month when #6 comes out. Anyways, about this issue....the art was great again as it has been with the first four issues. From the cool cover with Haunt in a "non-Spider-man" pose to the very detailed and beautifully colored interior, the art continues to easily be the best thing about this title.
As for the story, I think that most complaints I've read about the writing in this book have been not that it is terrible, but that it is not as good as Kirkman's other books. When I first started reading this title I had read very little from Kirkman, however, I read the first 4 volumes of The Walking Dead this weekend and I can easily see where the criticism comes from. I also think it is probably not fair to Kirkman, as Haunt is a "superhero" book, that requires a great deal of setup (orgin of powers, etc), where as a book like Walking Dead not only does not need a great deal of setup, but a lot of its what makes it good stems from the fact that both you and the characters do not know exactly what is going on. That being said I think that this was the best written issue thus far, as we have a better idea of who and what Haunt is, what weaknesses he may have, and I think we have a more clear vision of what this book is going to be all about. I thought this issue nicely wrapped up the first storyline, while at the same time introducing who some of the important good guys and bad guys are going to be throughout this series. For the first time, I felt like I had a good idea who Daniel and Kurt are and what we can expect from them in terms of how they act and respond to situations. Hopefully this feeling carries on in future issue, even if I do decide to stop reading this book.
While I enjoyed this a lot, it still had some issues. For one, its a little weird how we got from Haunt being almost unstoppable in the first couple of issues to getting exhausted last issue and getting bruised by gunshots this issue. It's not that I have a problem with the concept, as I actually think it makes for a better character, but it seems like they had no idea what Haunt's weaknesses were going to be and just kind of came up with them on the fly. Last issue's exhaustion is briefly explained by Kurt getting too focused and upset and then they are more or less like "oh it won't happen again". Then this issue apparently getting shot at close range makes the "Haunt suit" more or less like body armor, even though I'm fairly sure he got shot by multiple people at about the same range earlier in this series. Oh well, like I said, I think this makes the character better, and as long as this remains consistent it will be a positive for future issues. My other complaint deals with the pacing of the issue. While this issue was better than the previous ones, it still is a little fast and felt just a little bit rushed. I did think this was an improvement and there seemed to be more dialogue and less jumping from scene to scene, so hopefully this will continue to improve.
Overall, this was a pretty fun read that improved on the first four issues of this series considerably.
My rating: 4.25/5
