After some lackluster art and meandering stories the first Image published Hack/Slash hits the shelves. Tim Seeley is clearly writing a jumping on point for new readers here, and it gives an decent origin recap without being redundant to long-time readers. It isn’t a perfect first issue and even though the comic contained information about Cassandra Hack I wanted to know and introduced new readers to the universe the whole comic was one big exposition dump. It does it’s job at re-introducing the mythology, but I think there must be a smoother way of doing so. But it was still one of the better Hack Slash issues I’ve read in a while.
Daniel Leister is a definite improvement artwise. The last issues of the Devil’s Due run were terribly inconsistent ranging from bad to good but too cartoony. The colors are good and make the pencils pop and its just an overall good looking comic. Not something I’m raving about, but an improvement nonetheless.
But the most exciting thing about this issue is that it brings Cassandra back to her horror roots and much closer to the darker earlier issues. I do recommend this comic. Especially to anyone who may have been curious about Hack Slash but never picked it up til now.
