If you WRITE it, they will come?

It’s rare in a character commodity universe that you can build a feature character and then kill the same character. The power of #0.1 has really been able to harness this particular scenario — and made from it a really compelling argument to keep buying this title.

Some will probably say the story reads a lot like the beginning to a blockbuster movie. But, hey, what’s wrong with that if it reads well and really gets the story, the suspense moving?

There is nothing more refreshing when the artist that is working on the book can draw facial expressions — emotion — well. There is a lot of reason for it in this first book. And (and this is a big “And”), can get both kids’ and adults’ faces right. It doesn’t seem to be a priority for a lot of artists to learn how kids are drawn differently than adults. Only when called to do so do many artists fail — and fail to tell a story properly when doing so. None of that here. An inconsequential detail to many, but an important intangible to a well-told story, nonetheless.

I anticipate there is a lot more room for storytelling leading up to the final few pages. Lots of opportunity for more discovery there. Whatever the story behind that is will be the subject of more interesting story-lines that certainly will compel more reading. This issue made me very interested in learning more about that.

I’m all in on this series. Hopefully, when McNiven has finished his usual 4-5 issue run, the editors at Marvel will make a special effort to find another artist that closely matches his exceptional style. Because, you know, this is where these non-mainstream titles lose their momentum — no matter how good the first arc may be.

5-and-5 for me!!

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent
