I must admit that, as much as I have loved Abnett & Lanning's Nova, I have had a much harder time gaining the same feelings for Guardians of the Galaxy. Things have changed. I am now sure that this is the issue that grabbed me for keeps.
Several things make this a great issue. First, this is artistically beautiful. The colors, a subject of controversy in recent Marvel books, are perfect. The features on the humanoid characters are typically good. However, the features of the non-human characters, especially Rocket Raccoon and Groot (a sentient tree) are fantastic.
Second, the plot interweaves beautifully in this last issue of the Negative Zone arc. Here, GOG leader Star Lord is trapped in the Negative Zone prison, fighting for his life alongside Jack Flag and a couple of C-list villains. Jack and Star Lord play for time, while the remainder of the GOG team search for him and eventually save the day. This, of course, is the classic "hold out for the cavalry" plot, and it is executed perfectly.
Third, the humor is great. It is funny when Reed Richards asks the GOG who exactly they are, but is is much funnier when Star Lord mistakenly refers to Reed's team as the Fabulous Four. Cosmo the space-cop dog's inner dialogue is brilliant - he likes Mantis's telepathic communications, because her brain smells like flowers. And Groot the tree rarely says more than "Groot!", as he is a tree.
Finally, the side plots look so promising. It is clear that Blastar's men in the Negative Zone prison will eventually breach the portal into Stamford. That fight will be great. Even more fun will be Adam Warlock's weird attempt to make himself into some cosmic deity (this happens every decade or so in Marvel books). As a side note, I had not enjoyed the depiction of Warlock earlier in this title, but here this classic Marvel character just feels right.
I admit that I still do not know who all of the characters are, and I have no idea who has what power. But the cosmic characters look great (especially Major Victory, who is incredibly cool), and the interaction is fantastic. I am starting to understand Star Lord. He is kind of like the journeyman quarterback with decent skills who somehow motivates his team of talented misfits into a winning organization. I think that this team is going be a tough opponent come playoff time.
