This is the story…of a bunch of heroes… who talk like they are on the Real World: Space. To simply say this comic was “bad” or “cliché” would be an insult to bad and cliché comics.

Abnett & Lanning use of confessional asides throughout the comic are distracting at best, confusing at worst and completely ineffective as a story device. The story itself was confusing, porting the reader from the past to the future to current time with no sense of consistency or coherency.

Furthermore as a first issue, this comic is very unfriendly to new readers. There are constant references to things that happened in other comics. While this in and of itself is not so bad to previous readers, a well written “previously page” could have helped.

There is an obvious dig at DC comics in one of the panels which is not funny, just pathetic. This is coming from someone who hates DC! The cheap shot has no place in the story and was only put into the story to say “see how cool we are”

The last page cliffhanger seems to be not a plot device, but a “tell your friends to buy this comic!” device. The only thing they could have done to be more obvious is put Wolverine on the cover.

The art is pretty good and does add to the story. However adding a very little to nothing is still very little.

If you are a fan of the genre and familiar with the other titles, this is probably pretty good. For those of you looking to jump in, take your $3.00 and burn it, you will at least get a little heat from it. For those of you who have cats, I suggest using it as litter.

Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 3 - Good

  1. Yes, I know I have a typo. It should read: "My cat will be using it as litter today."

  2. Wow dude. I could not disagree more on every count. I am a new reader and I had no troubles at all. I thought it was a lot of fun. The cliffhanger ending appears to be a nod to the the old Guardians series from yesteryear, but I am sure there will be a twist.

  3. Yeah, apparently I am in the minority in my opinion. In the words of Dennis Miller, "I reserve the right to be wrong". I really did not like it all and maybe I was a bit to harsh, but I really think this comic was good awful.
