The “Archangel” Invictus appears, and not surprisingly, he takes issue with the presence of the Lanterns.

As one might expect, he’s more than any of the Lanterns can handle on their own – not that they don’t try. This plot feels like it might be building towards one of those moments when they all realize that they can only defeat Invictus if they work together! Though, to be fair, Arkillo makes a decent showing of himself.

The story is a straightforward super-powerful-villain-appears-and-beats-up-the-team plot, though there’s more to Invictus than meets the eye, maybe. He believes the Lanterns are evil – but what does he know that they don’t? Invictus himself is imposing, but ultimately, maybe, a forgettable design: a little Kirbyesque, but in a way that feels derivative of Kirby (and a few other things) rather than inspired by.

The art’s well done, and if there’s nothing truly impressive, the action’s clear and cool to look at as the different Lanterns bring their powers to bear in their own way.

It’s big and flashy and (at least attempting to be) epic, but from NEW GUARDIANS, what do you expect?

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good
