From the beginning, Bedard makes a clear distinction between himself and Tomasi with a wise choice to focus on Ganthet. After another extended scene from Brightest Day (the second in as many GL books this week), we see Ganthet officially resign from the position of Guardian. This is the strongest scene in the issue, with Bedard demonstrating that he understands the voice of the cold, but newly humbled blue dwarfs. There's also a seemingly innocent mention of Appa Ali Apsa, "The Mad Guardian", in this scene, which could be a clue regarding the identity of the Lost Guardian we've seen capturing the entities over in GL proper.
This is followed by a slightly odd scene of Ganthet forging his own ring (the deputy ring from Blackest Night had a 24 hour shelf-life) in an apparently abandoned foundry. My personal knowledge of pre-Johns lantern lore is limited to Kyle Rayner's appearances in other books, so if this foundry has been seen before it could be viewed as a nice throwback to the old method of making a ring. If it's a new addition, however, it falls flat. One would assume the Guardians have a more streamlined, assembly-line method for mass producing rings for new recruits. Especially considering how quick the turnaround is nowadays. Still, its neat to see Ganthet displaying his individuality with his own rectangular battery, adding to the concept that in Johns' lore, the batteries reflect the individual carrying them. Like purses. But less feminine.
Bedard does a good job giving John Stewart his own voice, something that many writers struggle with for some reason. The suggestion to get back to their roots with old-school Oan architecture is a nice touch, and a good reminder of Stewart's personal background. Kyle seems to be handled well, although there's not much to go on in this issue. Perhaps the biggest upset regarding the new title split is the writers having to share custody of a cast Tomasi worked hard to define. Hopefully Bedard will handle Soranik Natu with the same grace as his predecessor.
The second half of the issue focuses on what we assume will be the meat and potatoes of Bedard's first arc, the Alpha Lanterns and the mystery of planet Grenda. Lantern Hraalkar's vietnam style flashback sequence is an original concept, and a nice contrast to the usual bounce-back attitude we see from our regular heroes. The Alpha Lantern "requisitioning" damaged heroes holds the most promise for future stories, as everyone loves to hate the Alphas. Boodikka's request to partner with Stewart doesn't quite mesh, and seems like a weak attempt to force these two into an uneasy alliance. Either she has a crush on John, or she's up to no good. Why would she need a lantern with "a talent for stealth and infiltration" in an investigation of a planet where the entire population has gone missing? That seems like a guns-blazing type situation which may require more than two lanterns. Still, it's a smart move on Bedard's part to stick with Tomasi's extremely successful cop-show formula. The issue ends strong with lantern Glibberquip (great name) of sector 743 discovering that his partner's been requisitioned by the Alpha Lanterns.
The shift from Gleason to Adrian Syaf is an incredibly dramatic one, which is probably a good thing. He proves he's a competent illustrator, and after a few pages, one begins to transition more smoothly. Some of his angles are odd, and the layout of Hraalkar's dream sequence is a tad lazy. His aliens aren't quite as unique as the ones readers have grown accustomed to, but his humans are solid. He does a nice job with Stewart in particular, portraying him as a strong black dude without venturing into stereotype. His sketchy line-work may be a hard pill for some to swallow, but with some imagination it does evoke a sort of Neal Adams quality.
At the end of the day, change is difficult no matter how you slice it. Tomasi knocked it out of the park with almost every issue, so it's difficult not to compare initially. However, Bedard shows that he and Syaf can plow their own plot, and they offer a decent new beginning. A few missteps as expected, but it would be unfair to not forgive anyone those hiccups. Those loyal to Tomasi can find him right next door this summer. But for those fanboys who can't get enough Green Lantern, this shows that our ring-slingers are in competent hands.

hey man, sweet review
Great review. One nitpick, though, Green Man’s always been an Alpha Lantern, I think he was in the first wave of lanterns that got turned into the creepy robots.
@deezer: Haha. You’re right. I re-read all my Johns’ Lantern recently so maybe that’s why non-Alpha Green Man was fresh in my mind. Who knows. Thanks for the correction.
