It’s safe to assume that this issue of Green Lantern takes place at the same time as the Larfleeze Christmas Special as the titular character is noticeably absent from the proceedings. Geoff Johns opts instead for a one-shot focusing on Atrocitus and the Spectre as they deal with the problems caused by the Butcher, the entity of the Red Lanterns. It’s a nice character piece, expanding on Atrocitus’ fractured past and his drive for revenge, while also expanding on the Spectre’s own warped sense of justice. The two compliment each other well and Johns makes every moment they interact a vital and entertaining one. The art by Doug Mahnke remains just as vibrant and powerful as it has done over recent issues, and his action sequences are spectacularly rendered; if there’s a flaw with the book it’s the lack of even a cameo from Hal Jordan and the sense that we’re moving into the plodding monotony prior to the next big Green Lantern event.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
