First off, the art in this issue is amazing. Mahnke is killing it on GL and I can't get enough of him. Almost every page took my breath away and made me stop to appreciate the art. If I was reviewing the art alone, this would be my pick of the week. Unfortunately, the story suffers from the biggest weakness of Blackest Night: it should have been solely a GL and GLC crossover. Each month Johns and Tomasi are forced to tell a story in their respective books that is tied into the event and matters within that story, and yet doesn't have any significant ramifications which would confuse those reading only the BN miniseries. Im not saying nothing happens in these books, but it consistently feels like the creators are treading water and waiting for Blackest Night to reveal the next big surprise. By looking at this cover, one would think Sinestro is the focus of this issue but that thought would be wrong. After a few pages of Sinestro explaining the origin of the Universe and the other entities, Johns slices Sinestro in two. Why? Because Johns is saving him for Blackest NIght 8 and needs him off the table so that the story can focus on Jon Stewart and his small band of lanterns. This really is Jon Stewart's story, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just makes the cover of this issue incredibly misleading and takes away from the importance of this issue in the greater Blackest Night story. Despite what the cover indicates, you don't have to read this issue of GL if your reading Blackest NIght. Sinestro at the end of this issue is in basically the same place he was at the end of Blackest Night 7. Yes, somehow the white entity magically heals Sinestro. Ultimately this issue isn't terrible but its greatest fault is making me think about how much better BN could have been. The Sinestro Corps War is my favorite comic book event of all-time and Blackest Night would have surpassed it, if DC had stuck with a similar formula.
