This is going to sound funny, but I think I was slightly disappointed by this book. I still give it a 4 out of 5, but I feel like there was a little bit of a slump in this issue.
Let me explain.
First I figured that the Sinestro corps would show up along with Hal and the two Blue Lanterns (yes yes we all know how cool they are... they are pretty awesome). The fight was one of the best things about this book. I've been wanting to see something come close to that splash page Scriver did so long ago of almost all of the corps battling (remember the black corps was not included, there would have been spoilers aplenty if they had). The pages here done by Reis were amazing and the fight felt unique with all of the different aliens. I love how one of the Sinestro Corp guys ate a Red Lantern.
Second I was not shocked when Laira died. I hate to say it, but I've been waiting for it since she became a Red Lantern. The way she did die was great. Sinestro is by far one of my favorite villians and he has such a delivery that I feel only Johns can deliver.
Lastly was that Hal ended up with a Red Lantern ring. I was expecting him to wear a different ring in either this issue or the next. Although I was surprised to see that it was the Red Ring and not the Blue Ring like I originally thought.
So as you can see I'm confused on this issue. I felt it was a little predictible, but also I feel like Johns managed to throw me a curve ball on what exactly happened. I now completely understand what Ron said when he talked about Captain America being a good steak and that after a while, you grow to expect more. I know that this is in the middle of an arc and that Johns came off of the ever so fantastic Secret Origin not all that long ago, but I guess I wanted more from my steak this week.
Also even though this book is ment to be the Red Lanterns story arc, it's hard not to make it into the Blue Lanterns arc in my mind. It's not Johns that I feel is doing this, other then making them the way they are, but I focus on them too much during this arc. It doesn't help that the Rage Lanterns are essentially Rage Zombies from 28 Days Later in a sense.
I'm still waiting for someone to call Hal the "Chosen One" or for him to wear all of the rings at least once if not all at the same time at some point. Next issue we should see what's stronger; his rage or willpower.
Want to take a guess at what it might be?
