It’s been ages since I’ve seen Mike Mayhew doing interiors on a book, and so without a second thought, this issue of Green Arrow became a must-read; the story remains on par with previous issues, J. T. Krul weaving an intricate tale around the Green Arrow mythology and the circumstances of Brightest Day, which served the overarching story, if not this issue in particular. This one-shot focuses on Ollie’s relationship with his mother, and features some genuinely emotional moments, but never quite managed to draw me in completely. Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve not been enjoying the book since Krul took over, but this doesn’t feel like Green Arrow to me; it feels like Robin Hood in the DC Universe, and while that’s an interesting place for Ollie to go as a character, it does feel like a letdown given the skill Krul has shown on other books. Mayhew’s art doesn’t disappoint, meanwhile; it’s effective and gorgeous to look at. It feels like a more painterly in style than pencil-drawn, but fits the book perfectly as it tries to move into a more realistic and gritty territory.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
