I thought this was a very compelling first issue and will be coming back for more.
The Great Ten is the current DC universe Chinese superteam introduced originally in "52", a book I didn't read. Concepts created by the ever-inventive Grant Morrison.
The book has echoes of the excellent but uncompletd "The Twelve" over at Marvel by JMS, minus the nostalgia plus the exotic locale. This ten issue mini-series will most likely focus on each member of the Great Ten per issue. This issue featured the "Accomplished Perfect Physician" (one great conceit of the Great Ten is the literal translation sounding names of the characters). This AWOL-due-to-his-conscience chinese soldier who becomes a superhero origin story was really well told, unique, and fascinating.
A strength of this book is that Bedard is also trying to work in the political situation in China today, but in light manner that doesn't bog the book down. Comparisons and contrasts with the JLA and the Avengers make the book really fun. "Accomplished Perfect Physician" is a deep character, full of emotion and complexity, working for a government he partly despises, helping crush a rebellion he intellectually supports. Good stuff. Little things like a Page Two that lists all members of the Great Ten a la classic Avengers, etc, are really appreciated.
The art isn't spectacular but more than gets the job done. The storytelling is ace, page layout inventive, and McDaniel never confuses you on who is who and what is happening in each panel. Unlike some books like this, the team concept isn't forgotten, we get to see three other members of the team in action, and the whole team is summoned due the arrival of some "baddies" (it's not clear from neither the Accomplished Perfect Physician's point-of-view nor the average Chinese man-on-the-street pov whether the arrival of these "Gods" planning on restoring the pre-Mao proud Chinese culture are in fact not the real heroes) by the end of the issue, promising more fun for issue.
Art: 4 - Very Good
I thought the book was pretty fun, looking forward to the 2nd – wish the art was a hair bit better.
Loved this book–lots of interesting things going on here, both in backstory and in setting up the next issue. Look forward to seeing where it goes.
