As someone who has spent almost 2 of the last four years in Afghanistan I was excited to see this book come out. The art was great and very correctly detailed down to the Afghan National Police's insignia and the red beard dye on an elder. I can say that every place I was at had a zombie protection plan, so the last page depicting the coming zombie onslaught would be a welcome relief to most soldiers and marines that I served with.
My problem was with some of the story. Some of it completely encapsulated what it was is to serve in Afghanistan. Small Combat Outposts (COPs) like the fictional COP Alamo depicted have that exact feel. Fighting for sport, lowering the standard on what constitutes "privacy" for doing unmentionable activities, and burning shit are all familiar to anyone who has served in the 'Stan. I even really liked the new LT's use of counterinsurgency strategy, which urked his platoon that had taken an "us versus them" attitude towards the locals.
The parts I didn't like, and I'm sure are necessary plot devices for the rest of the story, were the lack of radio communication, the complete lack of interpreters, the hardcore drug use, and, on a smaller note, the use of the word "wadrega" for "stop". "Drezh" is the military "halt" and has more severe connotations in the language. It's like Mark Sable didn't even research this!
This story is a more modern take on the old tropes of Vietnam stories. I'm going to check out the whole thing as I'm sure many other vets will because we want to see the culmination of an event we've discussed for no less than 1,000 hours to avert boredom.

I showed this to the guys at work, and everyone asked if the artist or writer are vets it looked so real in a cartoony way.
