It’s more than halfway through Gotham Underground’s limited run now and instead of moving the story forward, something that should have happened around issue three, we’re getting a flashback that helps explain stuff that we already either knew or could reasonably be expected to assume.  The Whale came to Gotham because he figured Batman would be easier to deal with than Superman, surprise.  The Penguin is dealing with the government out of self-interest, surprise.

The puzzle metaphore was well used, but for the last few issues I’d like to see more of the Batclan doing involved in the story, and see some forward momentum.  What started off as a good series focusing on the Gotham crime world is starting to feel like yet another tie-in and an ad for another series (Salvation Run).

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 3 - Good

Comments

  1. I think the point of this mini is to establish the new status quo of the criminal underworld in Gotham.  And in that sense it is doing it very well.  It’s not really about the hero characters.

  2. I really enjoyed it. True that it was a look back issue, but it didn’t detract me from the main story and moving on. I absolutely loved the art, especially the page with a large shot of the Joker’s head

  3. Conor:  That’s possible, but something still needs to happen even if its not the heroes pushing things forward.  In issue #1 the Whale came to town, said he was taking control of Gotham’s underworld and that’s been where it’s been since then.  There’s been some tie-in to Salvations Run, which I’m not reading, and that’s about it.  By issue five of a nine part series I’d like to see more.

Or even more about the characters, but each issue just sort of states what’s going on, and then mucks about until its done.

Billydx24: I really liked the art.  I did like the stuff with the Joker, it’s nice seeing some of the Gotham rogues interacting without Batman around.  I just wish something would happen.
