Gotham City Sirens is one of the titles that will be dropped at the upcoming DC “revamp”. As a reader who jumped on late into the series I’m going to be sad to see it go. I’ve enjoyed this current arc even though it seems to be winding down in a very “so-so” way.

Peter Calloway writes an issue that steamrolls to the conclusion through various action sequences. We have Poison Ivy trying to woo Harley away from the Joker, Catwoman and Batman fighting through a horde of escapees, the obligatory scene of Joker meaningless psychotic violence, and the big showdown. It’s pretty formulaic and everything happens as you would expect. I do enjoy seeing so many of the classic Batman characters in one book and there is entertainment value here. But when it was over I was left with a feeling of “meh”. It’s actually good but nothing that will wow you.

I’ve really enjoyed Andres Guinaldo’s art but here it’s a mixed bag. The early pages with Ivy aren’t that appealing which may be due to the misuse of colors. The art really picks up after that and, with the exception of a very bland blackout sequence, I liked the look of the last two-thirds of the book. I was also impressed with Guinaldo’s creative layout of his panels. While some may find it distracting, I liked it.

Overall this was a good issue but not a great one. Once again it touches on the relationship between the different characters/villains in the Batman universe but not as much as in previous issues. This book won’t blow you away but it’s still a decent read for Bat fans.

  1. This is my second issue of this series and I enjoyed it, but that said, last issue was better, IMO.

I’ll be getting the last issues of this series as it comes out, just to see how things wrap up.

  2. same with me. I’m gonna see it through.
