Am I really just totally nuts for enjoying this book?

I know I’m going to catch hell for this, but this book keeps me coming back each month…..so long as it’s Dini writing one of my favorite Bat-characters. And I don’t even mean in the “he’s the best at capturing Harley’s voice” kind of way, I actually enjoy this for his take on The Riddler.

The pissy, bored genius of Edward Nigma has always been a lot of fun, and his current story-line has a load of potential. When Dini takes you into Nigma’s head, there’s a definite sense of Edward Nigma’s voice competing with the voice of The Riddler. Thankfully, it’s not done in a Deadpool way, but with more of a self-examining style that is often attributed to the Batman. How does this character reach his full potential? By being the good guy and applying his intellect towards a cause, no matter how small? Or by releasing any illusions of morality and allowing his mad mind to simply take advantage of everything and everyone, no matter how ridiculous? The title “Sirens” of the book have their moments, but they really best serve in this issue to drive The Riddler’s development.

Not to diminish Guinaldo, Fernandez, Hannin, etc on art duty! There’s a good measure of detailed line along with just enough pin-up quality for the femme fatales.

Just my two cents on a book that’s been a welcome bit of guilty pleasure.

Aloha!

  1. I loved this issue (4/5) and it is between this and Blackest Night #8 (4/5) for POW.
