The Goon is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary at Dark Horse.  Christ
I feel old.  I’ve been enjoying this title for the past several years,
and it’s been a thrill to see the art and story improve more and more
issue after issue.

I don’t think Eric Powell gets enough credit.
Some artists can’t even do a comic per month, yet this guy not only
gives us page after page of astonishing artwork, but he writes the damn
thing as well!  If I could, I’d hang his art all over my local museum
and scold those who argue that it has no place next to DaVinci and
Rembrandt.  I’d only have one thing to say to those people;

Knife to the eye!!!

The
story was appropriate for the anniversary, and it just goes to show
that you don’t ever tease a hobo with cake.  Their Gods are pimply,
smelly, and downright creepy.  Luckily for children everywhere, the
Goon will set aside his troubles and come in to save the day, with
fists o’ fury a-flyin’!

The back-up material really made the
$3.99 price tag worth it, because not only did you get pin-ups from
all-star creators (Mike Mignola, Jeff Smith), but you got a fascinating
look at what The Goon started out as.  To look at that, and compare it
to what you see today, Eric Powell has made monstrous strides as an
artist, and his style is truly unique in a medium that desperately
needs it.

So Happy 10th Anniversary, The Goon, and Congratulations Mr. Powell on all your hard work over the years!

And I’ll gladly take the Rape Gorilla off your hands if ya’ll aren’t using him.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

Comments

  1. I was actually a little annoyed with the back matter.  Pretty much all of that was in one of the trades.

  2. I picked this up on a lark, as I read this in trades, but I loved it.  The art is so great and the story was pretty funny.
