Powell and Marsh give us another issue that is as good as Godzilla #2, and leave the reader wanting more. The entire story moves all plot points and characters toward the inescapable “Destroy All Monsters” battle that will take place next issue. Political commentary falls away entirely, though society is still shown to be closer to the monsters they fear than the savior they hope for.

Artist Victor Dos Santos provides some awesome imagery in several scenes. The visage of King Ghidorah petrified in rock, with a monastery built around him is particularly striking, and his rendering of the spikey body of Anguirus rising amongst tree covered mountains provides a strange and monstrous contrast. However, on the whole, Dos Santos’ artwork still seems uneven. While his human figures come across suitably (the kid is cute, the hero is tough, etc.), Dos Santos’ monsters are at times ill-defined. Nevertheless, we are treated to the previously foreshadowed aerial showdown between Battra and Rodan–an exciting example of kaiju combat that has never before been rendered in comic or film!

The story arc comes to its climax next issue, with all monsters converging on Godzilla himself! I have a feeling that Powell’s run on Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters will be riding on just how spectacular the battle royale will be.
