A rare-misstep. At least IMHO. The cover of this issue promises “The Origin Of Croc Master”, and after the wonderfully creepy scenes he’s already appeared in during the series I was read for an entire issue about him. What I got was an uninteresting by-the-numbers villian origin story. Boy has abusive father, boy befriends crocodiles, boys father kills crocs, boy gets revenge, boy becomes a villian. No twist, no surprises. I’m disappointed. Perhaps it’s because the issue was written by only half of the writing team, Christos Gage. Where Mike Costa was/is? You got me. He seemed very enthusiastic during ifanboy’s SDCC video show and when I noticed his name missing on the cover, I immediately got worried. Gage has written some comics that I’ve really enjoyed over the years, and he’s also written some comics I’ve really not enjoyed. In fact, more so the latter. So it’s a shame that on a book he’s co-writing and I’m loving, he gave me a product that I didn’t enjoy. I hope it is just a rare misstep and that next month we’re right back on track. Otherwise, as with other Gage books, I might have to jump ship. Sigh.

When is Fusio coming back on art? Argh.

  1. I agree nice review.  Even the framing device to tell the story was a bit flat.  I like this book because it takes so many chances in telling the story through it’s structure and layout and expected a bit more of what we had last issue or in the special.
