We didn’t get our copies of this comic last week, but the Anthony Fuso cover really stood out to me.  Not in that Wow, what a fantastic cover sort of way, more in the “I wonder how much of his paycheck he has to give to Jonathan Hickman for blatantly ripping off his style?” way.

Is this cover supposed to be an homage?  If so, I guess it’s well done.  If not, Fuso should be ashamed of himself.

Apart from the cover’s….uhhh…originality issues, the interior art (also by Fuso) is really evocative.  It hit me the way Phillips’s art did when I first started reading Criminal.  And, in this instance, I don’t mean that in “wow, this isn’t the artist’s own style).  Fuso’s faces and shadowing seem far more detailed and expressive than Phillips.  They shouldn’t.  They’re very spare, but somehow the vagueness of the faces make their occasional expressions seem that much more important.  I also love the way he draws Chuckles’s shirt.

I haven’t read a GI Joe comic since I was twelve (I know, I know, I have the last series in trade form on my unread stack of trades, I’ll definitely get to it.), but I really enjoyed this, and it excited me to read the rest of the series.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
