The last issue of Gen-13 ended with the kids walking off to make the long trek to Tranquility with the possibility of one of their members being infected with Warhol Fever. Beatty took this opportunity for an intermission of the main story and to showcase a new team of Gen-Actives, Gen-14, and the current state of the US Government or at least what’s left of it.

Scott Beatty does a good job injecting some horrific ideas into his Gen-13 series, like these kids who were created for the sole reason to be breeding stock to be paired with other SPBs, specifically Gen-13, Heinrich Himmler would be proud of Tabula Rasa. With Gen-13 on the loose and the post-Armageddon rip with SPBs, this division of the Military uses Gen-14 as live practice, killing them over and over again. Beatty also does a good job showcasing some of the depths that some will go for the sake of the species. I’m interested in seeing how Holly will play later into the series later down the line since she’s the only who can remember her deaths.

With this issue we see Dan Hipp (THE AMAZING JOY BUZZARDS) take over the art chores. This is the 1^st time I’ve been exposed to his art and I would say that it’s not what I usually dig in my comics, but he does a good job with the layouts and getting the story across, while keeping the “cartooniness” of the series it had under Mike Huddleston. I wasn’t thrilled with Huddleston’s art at first and took a few issues, but then I really started to dig it and what it brought to the title. If Hipp took over the Gen-13 title as regular artist I could safely say that his art has something I enjoy about it. If Hipp isn’t your cup of tea he was only on for one issue, but I think he did a good job bringing that “indy” feel to a mainstream title.
