While I’ve enjoyed the previous Battlefields stories, this series as been a bit of a disappointment for me. It’s just been missing the emotional impact that the other stories had, and it hasn’t really had to much movement or character development. It was with great surprise that I found myself actually enjoying this issue. The story spent more time with the characters in the tank, and while I still couldn’t tell you word one about each of the individuals in the tank, there were still some memorable interactions. This issue also had some tense moments, especially when the Tankies stumble upon a big surprise. Ennis was also able to work in an emotional moment with the Padre that cleans out the decimated tanks, which was a really great couple of panels.

When I finished this issue, I got the distinct impression that maybe this should have been the first issue of the series. This issue strikes a nice balance between the different elements of Ennis’ war fiction. Also, from this issue, he could have explored the characters in the tank as well the Padre. These would have been interesting elements for a three issue miniseries, but unfortunately, this is the last issue of this storyline. As it stands, this specific storyline is a bit lacking, but this issue was very strong.
