I'd say about half of this book felt like it was just taken from movies
on the front line of WWII and the other half felt like an actual story.
The gore and violence of the first half when it focused on the guy that stammered when he gave orders didn't feel like narative so much as this is the horror of war. Maybe it's because the one guy that was supposed to be the main character had the personality of wet cardboard. It wasn't bad, especially with the beautiful Es art, but it did lack depth.
Then once it got rolling with the crew of tankies, if you'll excuse the pun, it kept the historical feel but became infinitely more interesting and relatable. I think the turning point wasn't the tank tread incident as the commander yelling at the guy making jokes and undermining morale.
This book isn't quite as good as the other Battlefields books, but it's still really solid and the best of the 3 Ennis books that came out this week.
