I honestly can’t think of the last time I read a comic that was this touching.

For the last two issues, we’ve been digging into Carrie’s psychology and how she deals with her pain and hate, giving a great counterpoint to the career military men she is surrounded with.  Nobody can seem to understand what she is going through, and even though the reader probably can’t either, it makes her sympathetic as hell.  Against this, we have the sweet romantic story that, even if we ignore the “goodbye letter” framing device, we know can’t end well.

After the stunning art in the “Night Witches” mini, I was very apprehensive about Peter Snjeberg’s pencils.  By the time I opened this book however, he had completely won me over.  It may be a bit simplistic, or rendered cartoony by the thick inking, but he shows the vulnerable humanity of these characters in their expressions and postures stunningly well.

Even as a lifetime superhero comic reader, these Battlefields books have become the highlight of my pull list.  Thanks to the iFanboy crew for introducing me this series.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
