I'll admit it straight up: I'm a huge Gambit fan. Always have been, always will be. So I'm biased in this direction.
That being said, this comic is fun. It's a good look at Gambit, a return to the charming thief that made me love him in the first place. There's a lot less angst in his brain than has been going down the past few years and a lot more, "I don't even give a f**k anymore." It's probably something we can all relate to.
Given all the other hairy crap that's going down in the Marvel 'verse, it's kind of nice to deal with the Remy we know and love, the relatively entertaining messes he jumps into as a form of escapism.
This issue definitely cemented Gambit's status as Marvel's Power Girl for me. Just like in D.C.'s World's Finest, Asmus seems to find a freaking plot device to get the guy's shirt off and have him run around half-naked for most of the book. Here, we get him charging it up with kinetic energy and jumping down a monster's throat to blow it up. Kids, you've gotta love it.
#4 was the end of the first arc, and I was happy. He's a solo act again, but it looks like our mystery girl--who finally gets a name--will be back at some point. For now, she's leaving him high and dry. Like any good gambler, he chalks the whole thing up to life being whatever it is and moves on to the next thrill-seeking self-destructive choice.
I love the hell out of Gambit.
Best line: "May as well die the way I lived...tryin' ta impress a pretty girl who don't seem ta care."
