This was an unexpected read, kinda just picked it up on a whim, thought I’d try something new. To preface, this week I also finally read “Kick-ass” by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. (freakin sweeeet read), with that said, this book, “FX” was very much in the same sort of vain (High School kid becoming a “superhero” in a world seemingly without “Supers”), only with a bit more of the Stan Lee/ Jack Kirby sort old school spin on it.

Story – 3.5
So the story wasn’t too bad, not entirely “original”, but what is these days. As I said in the intro, this book had a sort of old school feel, like it would have come straight out of the 1950-1960s BUT with a slight twist of “real world” thrown in. I wasn’t too sure going into the book whether it would be worth the read or not, but it turned out to be a bit of fun, although it did suffer a bit in the form of it being a quick “origin” story, the pacing was VERY fast, the plot just sped along at an alarming pace, not much character development and unlike the aforementioned “Kick-ass”, when the people without invulnerability get hit, they ain’t bleeding…. also….. a TALKING gorilla? *shrug* eh.

Art – 3.5
So the style of the art really had me thinking of Godland, not because it’s drawn in that Jack Kirby kinda style, but because of the colouring and the size of the lines and a few of the FX (pardon the pun?), just kinda felt like that too me, actually almost putting me off continuing with it; the colouring being the primary reason for this. I’m a bit of a colourist myself and it really pained me to see little to no shading at all, not even the basic single colour for darker parts, we only had single uses of colour (skin = pink, shirt = red, etc), would it have hurt to throw a FEW gradients or layers in there 😀 anyway, the lines were really quite nice if a little think in places, but still pretty okay overall.

Overall – 4 (no decimals in the voting and it’s better than a 3)
Not a bad first issue, if you have nothing else on your list or want to try out a new book, I can happily suggest this, but I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to pick it up, in saying that, I think I’ll pick up the next issue as this one did have me smiling away most of the way through…. kinda has a Kid-Green Lantern feel too it 😉 and I’m a sucker for the Kyle Rayner issues, gotta love a GL who has a vivid imagination 🙂

Story: 3 - Good
