If you’re not overly fond of obvious political statement comic books than this book really isn’t for you.  But you should have noticed that when you looked at the cover and saw Uncle Sam sitting on a bald eagle.

I am not a fan of overly political comments, and would never have picked this up if it weren’t for the names Palmiotti and Gray.  But, while the first pages did intrigue me (an Aryan meta gang attacks an Indian Casino in Arizona and declares that their race should have been wiped out a generation ago), I just don’t care about any of the characters in this book.  I find Uncle Sam to be completely tiresome, and none of his team felt fully fleshed out to me.

I’m not sure how this issue will play if you’re a Freedom Fighter fan.  But as someone who hoped that this would be a new series for me to be excited about, I was disappointed.

  1. Damn, you were in a bad mood or depressed last night.

What perspective are you reviewing this from?

The Wolverine review and this review get ratings of good but the words of the review are average at best.

So are you giving it an extra star cuz you recognize the appeal and respect the craft enough even if you personally don’t like it?

  2. Definitely not depressed, and only in a bad mood after reading certain comics, easily remedied by reading better comics.

I"m reviewing this from the perspective of someone who read a comic and then wrote a review of it.

I gave this a three because, as I said, this isn’t material I’ usually enjoy, but I thought maybe Palmiotti would make it work for me.  It’s not badly written, just not for me.  So, yes to the final question.

  3. I wasn’t overly impressed with this either.  I’ve never read these characters and I didn’t read anything in this issue to really draw me in.  It was solidly done, but I just don’t know if I’ll pick up more.

  4. I really enjoyed this one.  I liked the Human Bomb  and Phantom Lady bit, and the conspiracy bit was interesting.  I thought the art was awesome too.
