**UPDATE** Based on the comments below and the other scores for this title, I’ve come to the conclusion that I had a poorly printed copy of the comic.  I stand by my review because its of the issue that I purchased.**END UPDATE**

It’s very rare for me to read a comic where the art can seriously make an impact on my enjoyment of that particular issue.  When it comes to comic art, I’m fairly open to different artistic interpretations and styles.  Unfortunately for this issue of Franken-Castle, the art completely sucks.  It’s even more disappointing because I absolutely LOVE all of Tony Moore’s work, from FEAR Agent to Walking Dead to previous issues of Franken-Castle that he’s done.  It’s just a shame how bad this issue is.  The comic is drawn by three separate people with the other two artists trying to ape Moore’s style.  While a solid inker or colorist may be able to sweep in and bring some consistency, it didn’t happen with this issue.  The art just looks absolutely sloppy and the inking is shaky, looking like it was done by someone going through withdrawal.  And the coloring.  Oh lord, the coloring is so bad.  It’s washed out on some pages and completely blurry on others.  Nothing in this comic pops, and details seem to bleed together on certain panels.  It’s just a real shame.

On the story side of things, Remender does a solid job.  While I’ve loved this entire series, I haven’t been digging this crossover with Daken, mainly because Daken is a big, smelly deuche.  That said, I felt that this issue was really solidly composed with great action and smart dialogue.  It’s just too bad that the art ruined his story.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 1 - Poor

  1. In thinking about it, maybe I had a poorly produced comic…did anyone else have the same issues?

  2. Uh yeah mine looked pretty damn good. Go to your LCS and return it.

  3. Damn, that must be it.  I just must have a poorly printed copy.  Oh well, I stand by my review because its of the issue that I purchased.
