Raven Gregory has done it again.  Known mostly for his work in the horror genre, Gregory now tackles superheroes, or rather super-powered people, and it is all I could have hoped for.

The story is told in two parts, the first of which features our protagonist, on his way home after having a rather shitty day, only to find in his apartment a levitating woman.  She then summarily kicks his ass and while doing so, the two exchange some words and we learn a few things, such as that the two have a history and the woman apparently chose her powers over her friends.

In the second part of the comic, we go back in time to when the protagonist is a bit younger and he helps out a local kid who gets picked on by some bullies.  He goes to the kids house, finds some pot lying around and thinks that’s pretty nifty, but the bullied kid has something more enticing, the comics namesake Fly, a drug that gives one the ability to fly.

Both tales are penciled by Eric J and he utilizes different styles for each one, the present tale being more of the Image school, with lots of shadows, while the past tale is more cartoony and bright, but not silly cartooning.  Overall, his art is pretty good, not great; however his storytelling is absolutely fantastic.  There are a number of pages that I read over again just to appreciate the panel progression.  The action scenes are all very exciting to look at and knowing Gregory, I’m sure there’ll be a lot of cool stuff for Eric J to draw in upcoming issues.

This is a fantastic first issue and I highly recommend checking it out.  Superhero stories can get a bit tedious and unoriginal, but in Gregory’s hands all I can expect is fun, outrageous creativity.  His dialogue is sharp, fun, and engaging, as it usually is.  He tells us just enough in this issue to earn our interest and get us excited for what’s to follow.  You should definitely join the ride.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
