For the most part I’m enjoying DC’s assortment of mini-series built around the main Flashpoint book and intended to give us a better picture of the Flashpoint world. “Flashpoint: Legion of Doom” follows Heatwave, a pyromaniacal villian captured for murder and sent to the Block while he awaits execution.

Adam Glass handles the writing duties and does a pretty good job. He sets up his story with a nice action packed sequence which results in Heatwave’s imprisonment. From there the story slows down a bit as Glass focuses on the Block and some of the fellow criminals Heatwave encounters. The prison scenes aren’t terrible but they aren’t particularly interesting and it’s hard to really see where Glass is going in the brief three issues he has to work with.

I was really impressed with Rodney Buchemi’s art. It was a nice combination of old-school character designs and well structured panels. I was especially impressed with his layout of the opening action sequence. I wish there was more of that because when Glass’ story slows down during the prison scenes, the art seems to fall off too.

While not perfect, this is a pretty interesting issue. But while it keeps your attention, it doesn’t do much to broaden the scope of the Flashpoint world. Where other FP books have tried to show the difference in the landscape and the magnitude of the conflicts, this one hardly shows any connection. With that said, the issue still has enough to keep me around for one more issue but it does have room for improvement.

Story: 3 - Good

  1. When I read this the other day I was actually surprised you didn’r pan it.

    Good to have different opinions.

  2. You know, this is one that I wish I could give a 2  1/2. It’s very average. I enjoyed the first part of the issue but it really went down from there. 3 is probably too high.
