Emperor Aquaman was one of the Flashpoint books I was pretty excited about and while it’s not as fun as this week’s Deathstroke issue, it’s still pretty entertaining and worth a look.
We know that in the Flashpoint world Aquaman is at war with Wonder Woman. Writer Tony Bedard uses this issue as a kind of inside look at Aquaman, his followers, his intentions, and his motivations. The writing is fairly solid and the book is well structured with good pacing but it lacks the punch I was hoping for. This issue is certainly not a bad one but I’m hoping the story picks up a little in the next book.
Ardian Syaf’s art is better than the story. There are some really strong panels and his attention to detail is really good. It’s not perfect and there are certain scenes that fall flat. But I love Syaf’s Aquaman as well as most of his characters and his style fits well with this title.
This isn’t a bad issue but I couldn’t help feeling like it could have been better. Still, there’s enough entertaininment here to reccomend the book and keep me onboard for the next issue.
Art: 4 - Very Good
Thought Syaf’s work in this was very Kubert-esque.
Very good comparison. I love Kubert and I do see his look in Syaf’s work.
