This was a title I wasn’t planning on getting prior to DC’s big reboot announcement. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons for the teaser of the big event – to get us to buy these books! As one of the guys who is VERY concerned about DC’s plans, this book does little to ease my mind.

It doesn’t take long to see that many things are out of whack in this issue. From some well known Batman characters holding unusual positions to references to the deaths of some key Batman players, the issue serves more as a setup story. Usually this would be ok except for the fact that the mini-series is limited to only three issues. It’s hard to see this being significant in such a short period of time except to show how botched the Batman universe can be.

Azzerello’s writing is pretty solid. The dialogue works and the book is well structured. But my main concern remains – is this story going to carry any weight when it’s all said and done? Risso’s art is pretty good. I enjoyed some of the darker, more shadowy looks to some of his panels. It isn’t the best work but it does seem to fit the book.

This is a pretty dark and dreary story. There isn’t a single smile throughout the issue until the final page. It’s nicely written with servicable art. But I can’t shake the drastic alterations to the Batman storyline in light of DC’s major announcement. It’s yet to be revealed how much of this issue carries over into DC’s plan for the Batman universe. Personally, I hope very little but time will tell. That aside, judging the book on the merits of a single issue, it’s a fairly interesting read and well constructed book.
