The penultimate issue of this Flash Gordon mini-series (which leads into the upcoming regular series) is truly something else. It advances the story further than the previous issues in no time at all, the writing is the freshest it’s been throughout the run, and the artwork is magnificent.

This time around we are, essentially, prepared for the final showdown with Ming the Merciless. There’s some action involving Flash and Prince Barrin which reflects their battle from the 80s film; there’s some a brilliantly written villain in the form of Ming the Merciless who proves to be far more terrifying than Max Von Sydow’s; and there’s a brilliantly staged escape sequence involving Dale Arden (in which she wears skimpy clothing, which makes this book even better).

The cliffhanger doesn’t mess around, telling you exactly what to expect in the next issue; and the structure of the book is brilliant. The colours are beautiful and truly enhance the artwork, while the lettering during Dale’s escape highlight the danger of the world of Ming.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Can someone that doesn’t care about the character and doesn’t know anything about him and didn’t see/read anything with him, enjoy the series? Is this some sci-fi romp?
    Thanks.
