Of all the things I read this week, Flash Gordon #2 was the most sincere and interesting to me. The first issue was slightly jumpy in places, and the lack of anything that relates to the pure sci-fi aspect of the Flash Gordon mythos.

This issue, however, was a slab of goodness. The action was spot-on, and the sequences with Ming the Merciless and Dale Arden was almost exactly how I would imagine an interaction between a malicious overlord and an attractive young woman who he clearly wants to manipulate (among other things)…not that I imagine those sorts of things very often.

The ending was great, ending on a real cliffhanger. I know this will not be to everyone’s tastes, but in my opinion it is an excellent spin on the Flash Gordon tale. It’s almost an “ultimate” Flash Gordon. (Also: I know the letterer/publisher…he runs my local comic shop here in the UK, and I’ve seen pages from future issues…awesomeness is the only word to describe them).
