With a few notable exceptions, DC has done pretty well with it's Final Crisis periphery books, in that they are mostly good reads in their own right as well as relevant to the story progression of the event itself. Using the spear of destiny, Vandal Savage/Cain is able to strip Crispus Allen from the Spectre. The last time we saw this was Day of Vengeance, and that showed us exactly how corruptible Spectre is in the absence of a host. Now that Cain has enslaved Spectre, the logical plan is to put Allen back in, but before that can be done, Cain has Spectra relay everybody's favorite emo math equation to... pretty much the entire world. Seeing that this issue is late, if one reads this before FC #5, we find that the action at the end of this book, along with the Crime Bible's comment that Cain will lay the path for a new god, we see that truly come to fruition as Darkseid reveals himself to the world in the main title. Pretty smooth, I'd say, but not my favorite part of this book. That would be the explosion of an old comic cliche, where Cain is shot in the eye from off panel, starts to yell "WHO DARES?", and by opening his mouth he only creates another target. A subtle and clever moment in an otherwise pretty story-intesive issue.
