FF #17 seemed to prove that Jonathan Hickman was highly skilled at writing the occasional humor issue of The Fantastic Four. It was a surprise PotW for me.

FF #18 throws in a lot of humor, as well, but it fallsflat. Whereas the last issue had a hilarious final page reveal, this issue’s final panel feels like a Scooby Doo or Bazooka Joe Bubble Gum joke.

Hickman is also less successful in the pacing of multiple stories here. I found myself fighting the urge to skip entire pages.

  1. I’m wondering if by returning Johnny to pre-“death” status quo Marvel is trying to clear the decks for the next writer. I was disappointed with the ending as well.
