After hearing just nothing but great things about the book in the podcast, I managed to break down and got a bunch of Fear Agent trades.  Then I grabbed the last two back-issues, making this issue my first to pick up officially on my pull list.  It’s an unabashedly wacky book, full of as many pulp sci-fi tropes and goofy humor than you can shake a ridiculously designed ray gun at.  Those who know not, the book is about Heath Huston, a drunken Texan space mercenary flying around doing what drunken Texan space mercanaries do: pull jobs and try in vain to drown the day aliens came to attack and kill most everyone he knew in a fountain of alcohol.  Over the last few issues, there have twists and turns concerning the lives of Heath and all he knew.  As we last left Heath, he’s stuck in some odd cowboy planet with space Amish and his ex-wife.

With this issue, it’s become clear Heath’s hit a wall.  During his conversation with Char, his ex-wife, Heath stating things you wouldn’t think possible from the guy from reading the first few issues.  It’s a turning point for the character for sure, a declaration that Heath Huston will progress further  After reading in rapid-fire 20+ issues of the guy and his boozed-up shenanigans, it’s clear why he wants to move on from this.  Like Josh said in the POTW article, Remender has managed to do everything to this guy short of just putting him out of his mercy and it’s shown Heath has simply had enough.  What follows is a moment, just a small one, that demostrates MAYBE Heath can have a happy ending, after all.  Then comes the rug-pull moment…

All in all, this book is a great read.  It’s somewhat like Godland in a lot of ways but starkingly different in a lot of other ways as well.  It’s a lot of two-fisted fun with a cosmos-transversing redneck with an assortment of weapons and an ever-constant bootle of booze at hand.  If you did “fun” books or just enjoy a good sci-fi romp, I’d bet dollars to doughnuts, you might find Fear Agent to be a good read.

"Starkingly" is an absurdly awesome made up word!

Glad you’re on the bandwagon, Tork!

  2. And just to put out there, Josh’s review is printed near the back.  Congrats, Josh.
