Let me get this out of the way: Besides Bendis and Bagley's Ultimate Spider-man, Ultimates was the
second comic run I ever read. I absolutely loved Millar's writing and
enough has been said about Hitch's art that I don't need to repeat what
other much better writers have said. Also, I am not a Fantastic Four fan. I've never read their book, not even the Ultimate version. However after a stellar first issue I was really excited to see where they story was going.
This issue blew me away from the amazing cover to the "pretty girl" close up to the Atlantic Ocean two page spread. Bryan Hitch just seems to be having too much fun cramming as much detail as he can into every single panel he has to work with, truly spectacular.
The story blends the science and techno-babble that Reed Richards is known for into a fairly convincing and fun scifi story. The earth is doomed in less than a decade and a group of well meaning scientists and wealthy philanthropist are going to save us, not by creating some new hybrid car or new recycling method but by building a copy earth in a new dimension. Of course they also don't want anyone having any weapons or countries raising armies so they built a giant robot to be the police force, clearly this will have good results.
There is also an interesting b story line regarding Johnny, his new band that he started and a pretty young super-villain that seems to have a crush on him. I hope that maybe well see more of this develop over time but as it was there just wasn't enough devoted to really make it interesting for me.
All in all I would say this is a must read even if you aren't a Fantastic Four fan. Millar seems to be having a lot of fun writing the first family of Marvel and well Hitch is on his game as well.
