Having not enjoyed the Literals crossover, or the interlude between that series and this one, I was really worried that the time had come for me to drop Fables.  If not altogether, then to at least go back to reading it in trade.  Issue #87, however, has reversed my opinion.  We’re in strict fable stories again.  The main characters are up at the farm, and there’s a few side characters still left behind in Fabletown with the new big bad.

Storywise, this is an issue where you get your feet under the new story.  Willingham pretty much did this right after the Fable War ended, but then that pesky crossover happened, and now he needs to reset the scene a bit.  He does most of this through conversations between the witches: Ozma, Ardelia, and Totenkinder.

Buckingham sets the scenes on every page of this issue with specific borders.  Brooms for the witch parts, rain for the farm parts, spiders for the big bad parts, and little Bufkin heads for the scenes that take place back in Fabletown.  It’s a neat little device, and it really does hold the scenes together.

Solid as this issue was, it was merely solid, and not “Oh Dear God, my pants need changing.”  And that’s ok, because it’s a huge step up from “I think I’m going to drop this book.”  It appears as though this witches storyline is going to grow into something huge, and incredibly nasty/fun, which is all I’ve been hoping for for months now.
