The last issue of Fables was easily one of the three best comics I've read in years, so it would be completely unfair to compare this issue with that one. We've jumped ahead a little bit from the emotional punch-in-the-gut therein, but some of the somber tone spills over just the same. It's because of that bleakness that I was so impressed with this issue's abilities to do little things that made me smile. The farm Fables questioning if they buried Geppeto deep enough in just one, small panel makes for perfectly timed black comedy. Pinocchio's conversation with Flycatcher as they walk together through the woods, remembering Blue, is completely believable and relatable from both of their perspectives. There's a taste of Rose Red finally stepping back and taking a long look at herself, even if she is still acting out in the most petulant ways possible, gives us just a flavor of her coming evolution as a character. And, more than anything else, we get a good portion of a character I hope to see more of... Stinky, the Story Mechanics Badger! In all seriousness, some of the ideas presented through this character are very interesting and stretch the boundaries of the fourth wall, and interestingly call on us to question our suspension of disbelief. The one down note is some of the art. Several characters look off model. Bigby, Frau Totenkinder and Pinnochio look both too "clean" and too bright-eyed, as it were. Also, and the colorist is probably more to blame for this but... Beast is Hispanic and Beauty is a redhead now? The art in the back-up story was refreshing in it's familiarity, but I still prefer that one issue be dedicated to one story. I'm sure the point of the back-up's tale will become evident eventually, but for now I found the interruption distracting, and I'm not sure why it couldn't have existed as it's own one-and-done issue. These complaints, though, are minor. This book's still got it in spades.
