Good to see Buckingham back at the art helm in this issue as I didn't really care for the guest art on the last. I gotta admit, however, that I did have some beefs with the visuals in this issue. First off was the borders for the Cinderella storyline. I've always liked the fact that Fables always features these thematically appropriate borders on the sides of the pages. It gives it a stronger "storybook" air, it helps you realize when the story has shifted location or focus, and also helps to set the atmosphere of the story being told. That said, I thought the black & white circles with glass slippers in them didn't really set any atmosphere for me, and worse, they distracted my eye from the panels--especially when they would reverse their coloring scheme. The other thing I didn't like visually was the big pink boxes they gave to Cinderella's noir-style narration of the scene. I just didn't like how freaking huge they were! Again, I found them to be really distracting and harmful to the composition of the pages. It's a real shame too, because I thought Buckingham did a fantastic job with the actual art in the panels.
I'm always amazed at Willingham's ability to write a smooth flowing script, and this one doesn't disappoint. The story clips along at a fine pace without feeling too fast, and the ending had me saying, "Okay, that was awesome!"
I must admit, I didn't expect the Fables team to kick off the long anticipated war with the Adversary in quite this way. With the great stories of Boy Blue and Bigby infiltrating the Homelands in the past, I thought the war was going to be introduced in a much more straightforward manner. This way is cooler though. Simply because it wonderfully shows how Fabletown is one step ahead of the Adversary, and that you really cannot underestimate the Fables.
