The manager in my LCS stopped me to chat about how great the cover of this book was, and I got to talk up "Ex Machina." This really is an amazing cover -- not the one listed with these pulls, but a cover with two different angles of the Commissioner's face, and a police badge in the background; for a second I had a fantasy that Tony Harris was drawing 'Gotham Central.' The interior art is also fantastic.
Vaughan has dropped the date stamps on the various timeline shifts. Is that a new thing or did I just notice? So the book relies on subtle changes in coloring, along with context, to signal chronological shifts. I'm not sure it entirely worked -- I have a preference for clarity when it comes to time and place -- but the issue does mostly hold together. (With one exception -- I had no idea what the bank robbery scene was about; anyone?)
I like the idea of a single issue devoted to a supporting character's backstory, and I've always liked Angotti. However, I'm not sure that these flashbacks really told us anything noteworthy about her. This looks to be a standalone. I hope it signals an important upcoming role for this character and isn't just filling in space. I love this book, but I'm ready for something to happen.
